Traditional & Bold
Bold will hold. Strong lines, confident shapes, and artwork designed to hold its presence.
The oldest rulebook in tattooing
American traditional is where the modern shop comes from. Sailors, soldiers and working people of the early 1900s — tattooed by legends like Sailor Jerry Collins in Honolulu — wore anchors, eagles, panthers, roses, daggers and swallows, rendered in thick black outlines and a short, punchy palette of red, green and gold. The style's design rules were forged by necessity: a tattoo had to be done fast, read instantly, and survive decades of sun and salt water. "Bold will hold" wasn't a slogan; it was engineering.
Why the rules still work
A thick outline is structural. It holds a tattoo's silhouette as skin ages, keeps colour fields from bleeding into each other, and makes a piece readable at a glance — which is why traditional tattoos from fifty years ago often look better today than delicate work from ten years ago. Tribal and blackwork share the same virtue from a different tradition: solid black shapes, drawn to follow the muscle, that hold their presence for a lifetime.
The classic flash vocabulary
Part of traditional's charm is its shared language: roses for love and loss, swallows for distance travelled, panthers for courage, daggers, snakes, ships, hearts and banners with a name inside. Getting a classic design isn't unoriginal — it's joining a hundred-year conversation. And the vocabulary flexes: modern traditional artists put new subjects through the old rules constantly.
Traditional & bold work at Tough It Out
If you want a tattoo that will still be legible when your grandkids see it, this is the style we'll point you toward. The shop does classic American traditional, solid tribal and blackwork, and bold statement pieces at both locations. Walk-ins suit this style especially well — a lot of traditional work is sized to be designed and done in a single sitting.
Traditional pieces are often single-session tattoos. Walk in to either shop, or send the idea through and we’ll size it honestly.

Solid black tribal shark and lion tattoo — bold shapes, hard edges, no shading — from the shop's own work.
