Typography for skin

Lettering is the oldest tattoo request there is — a name, a date, a vow — and one of the most technically unforgiving. Skin is not paper: it stretches, curves and ages, and a script that looks perfect on a screen can collapse into itself on a forearm. Real tattoo lettering is typography engineered for the body, and Chicano script — the flowing, ornate style born in the same Californian communities as black and grey — is its most influential modern school.

What separates good lettering

Spacing, above everything. Letters need room for ink to settle over decades without closing up; loops and flourishes have to be sized so they'll still read at sixty. A good lettering artist drills the baseline to the curve of the muscle, balances the flourishes against the word's meaning, and will tell you honestly when a phrase is too long for the placement you had in mind. Fonts are a starting point; the final script is drawn by hand for the word and the body it goes on.

Names, verses and mottos

Children's names and family tributes, memorial dates, scripture and verses, single-word mottos, song lines — lettering carries the most literal meaning of any style, which is exactly why it deserves more design care than it usually gets. It also pairs beautifully with imagery: a name set into a floral shoulder piece, a date anchoring a portrait.
