Realism & Portraits

A face has to read as a face. Detailed work designed to capture faces, memories and meaningful imagery with precision.

The hardest thing to tattoo

Realism asks a tattoo to do what a photograph does — and a portrait is the hardest version of that ask, because humans are wired to read faces. Get a landscape five percent wrong and nobody notices; get a jawline five percent wrong and the person it's meant to be disappears. Portrait work only became truly possible as machines, needles and pigments improved through the 1980s and 90s, and it remains the clearest test of an artist's control.

How realism is built

A realistic tattoo starts long before the needle: the reference photo is everything. High resolution, good lighting, an expression worth keeping — the artist will tell you honestly whether a photo can carry a tattoo, because no amount of technique can fix a blurry source. From there the piece is constructed in layers of value and texture, skin tones translated to ink, highlights preserved rather than added, edges kept soft where a face is soft and crisp where the light breaks.

Why people choose portraits

Almost every portrait we do is about somebody — a parent, a child, a grandparent, a pet, a musician or figure who shaped someone's life. Memorial portraits are some of the most meaningful work in the shop. Realism beyond faces covers animals, nature, statues, film imagery — anything where the goal is "make it look real" rather than "make it look drawn."

Portraits at Tough It Out

Portrait work is Julio's favourite discipline — after eighteen years, transformative cover-ups and portraits are the two things he talks about most — and Elias builds photorealistic work from portraits to full nature scenes. Bring the best photos you have to a consult at Waukegan or Carpentersville and they'll design the piece around what the reference can honestly support.

Portrait sittings run longer than most tattoos of the same size — the detail density is simply higher. Eat first, sleep well, and plan the day around it.
